You know those clothes in your closet that just sit…and sit…and sit?
They taunt you every time you open your closet, swaying there in their barely worn or new with tags glory. You’re keeping them in the hopes that maybe, one day, you might eventually wear them for a super specific kind of event, but haven’t yet.
But, you’ve finally came to the conclusion that if you haven’t worn certain pieces by now, you probably won’t be anytime soon. So, what do you do with the clothes in your closet that have gotta go?!
Resell ’em.
Yep, you read that right. I decided to clean out my closet a couple of years ago and resell the clothes online. I never looked back!
This post is all about how to clean out your closet, sell clothes online, and make money while doing it on the Poshmark app!
As long as you have some clothes in your closet that you no longer wear/want/need, or you’re interested in a new way to make money online, this is for you!
This is one of my favorite topics ever, because ANYONE can do this.
It’s an amazing way to keep a rotating closet if you’re into that, to make a little extra cash, and to declutter! In my opinion, Poshmark is the best app to sell clothes online, so I’ve outlined five steps that will help you begin your reselling journey from the comfort of your couch.
Ready to learn how to make a little extra cash by selling things you already have? Let’s get started:
1. Create An Account
Surprise! Bet you didn’t see that one coming, huh?
If you’re a first-time user, be sure to use my code ORGWITHMORG upon sign-up (#shamelessplug) to get a $10 credit.*
Head over to poshmark.com to make an account and get started. Here’s what the sign-up form will look like:
When signing up, create an interesting username. Try to make it short and sweet, and something that’s easily searchable or shareable to other users. The more original the better; you don’t want people getting you confused with someone else because your names are so similar!
If you create something catchy, people are more likely to remember YOU and your brand, which means they’re probably more likely to visit/share your closet.
Next, connect your social media channels upon sign-up, if you’re comfortable. This makes it easier to share your listings and gain exposure, ESPECIALLY to Pinterest.
Pinterest is incredibly useful in finding clothing items you’re looking for, and if your Pinterest is linked to your Poshmark account, you have the option to share your listings to any of your boards. Easy exposure for the win!
I can’t say if Pinterest has had an effect on my sales directly, but I average anywhere from 5-30 repins on my Poshmark items from the simple click of a button, so to me, it’s worth it because there’s no extra work on my part!
If you’re already signed up, yay! You’re ahead of the game.
*Some people join to solely sell but most people end up purchasing, too. It’s nice to have a $10 credit juuust in case you see something that catches your eye, and there’s no pressure to ever use it if you decide you’re truly just a seller.
2. Order Shipping Supplies from USPS
Woohoo! Step 1: complete.
Now that you have your Poshmark account created, you should head over to USPS.com and create another account. I promise: no more account creation after this!
One of my favorite things about Poshmark is that shipping is ALWAYS the same rate for up to five pounds. Whether you’re shipping a pair of earrings or a winter coat, it’s $6.79.
Poshmark uses PRIORITY mail, which includes priority mail mailing boxes and priority mail flat rate boxes (not express). Poshmark used to solely use priority mail, but they expanded it to include flat rate and regional rate, too.
Some people have had issues with sending flat rate packages, but I use them for almost all of my packages and have never had a problem!
If your post office says they aren’t allowed, feel free to show them the fine print on the shipping label that states to “not refuse or send these parcels Postage Due.”
You can also search “poshmark shipping letter” on Google, where you can find an official letter from Poshmark about what packages USPS should accept.
Since Poshmark ships through USPS, you can get free shipping supplies. I’m talking stickers, envelopes, AND boxes. Awesome, right?
USPS gives you the option to order supplies online that will be shipped right to your door, which is incredibly convenient. Keep in mind that some supplies do take a little long to arrive, especially if you order around the holidays. If you decide to order supplies online, I’d be prepared with a backup plan in case an item sells and your supplies haven’t arrived yet.
Want a back-up plan or just not interested in the online supplies option? No worries. I’ve got you!
Dollar Tree (one of my favorite stores ever) usually has shipping supplies, and if you’re going for the fancier route, you can purchase incredibly cute printed polymailers, such as the ones linked below.
You also have the option of stopping by your local post office and picking up supplies there. Got any boxes laying around your house that you need to get rid of? You can use those, too!
Want to know what other tools are useful when starting a Poshmark closet? You can see some of my favorite shipping supplies (and reselling tools in general) here.
3. Find your "spot"
Now that all of your accounts are created (thank goodness), we can move on to the fun stuff. Have a white wall in your house? A room with lots of natural lighting? A cute rug? Perfect!
Photos are the FIRST thing people notice about your closet. You want your items to stand out. Of the thousands of white sweaters or band tees for sale, you want people to have their eye on YOURS.
In the picture below, my eyes are automatically drawn to the striped tops because they are different. You want that to be each and every one of your pieces!
Poshmark is a lot of trial and error. I began by laying pants on a pink blanket on my bed and hanging clothes from my closet door. And even though those pictures weren’t the prettiest or the highest quality, items still sold! They don’t compare to my sales now, sure, but you don’t have to have the perfect setup from the get-go.
It’s a continual learning process. I’ve had my photos at least five different ways now, and I’m still experimenting with what works best for me. You can see my Poshmark closet here to see what my photos look like currently!
Whether you hang your items, use a mannequin, model them, or do flat lays, make sure your presentation is something that, as a buyer, would make you interested in purchasing! Something as simple as a backdrop (you can see the one I used for a long time here) can make all the difference.
4. Purge your personal closet
Whether you just want to get rid of your personal clothing, have a rotating closet, or become a part-time or full-time reseller (woo!), starting with your personal closet is always best.
It’s inventory you already have in your possession that you were probably going to get rid of anyway, so listing it on Poshmark doesn’t really hurt anything.
Even if you only photograph and list something once a day, or only on the weekends, that’s a start! Plus, you can get a feel for how Poshmark works, what brands/items sell best, etc. before investing any money.
5. Sharing is caring
Poshmark is a social-based platform, and one of their main tools is sharing. Basically, when you “share” your item, it’s moved to the top of search results.
If someone is looking for a black bathing suit, and you just shared yours, it’ll be one of the first results people looking for that item see. The share button looks like this:
You can share other members’ listings, too, if you want to build your following, but the really important thing is to SHARE YOUR LISTINGS. People can’t buy your item if they can’t find it.
Sharing = exposure = sales. And that’s exactly what you want!
